Science 3rd Quarter
The students will be starting the Ecosystems unit. In this unit, the students will learn about producers, consumers, herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, relationships among species, habitats, and human involvement. The students will also be creating their own ecosystems for this unit. They will be responsible for completing a project on one ecosystem with a group.
Math 3rd Quarter
3rd quarter is all things fractions. The students will learn how to simplify, add, subtract, divide, and multiply fractions. The students will have to work with fractions with like and unlike denominators.
Math 2nd Quarter
The students are finishing up the unit on polygons and coordinate grids. They will begin the unit on multiplying and dividing decimals in December. The students will then begin learning about order of operations and solving expressions. We will finish the quarter with numerical patterns.
Science 10/21-2nd Quarter
The students will be starting the Human Body Systems Unit on October 21. They will learn about genetics, inherited traits, learned behaviors, the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system, the musculoskeletal system, the digestive system, the nervous system, nutrition, physical well being, and human growth and development.
Math 10/7-10/21
The students will be revisiting the power of ten and place value of whole numbers and decimals.
Math 9/16-9/20
The students are continuing with Multiplication and Division. The students will work with 4 digit dividends and 2 digit divisors to find the quotient. They will be looking at estimating answers to defend if their answer is correct. The standards the students are working with this week are 5.NBT.5 (solve word problems with 2 by 2 digit numbers) and 5.NBT.6 (find quotients with 4 by 2 digit dividends and divisors).
1st Quarter science
The students will start the Weather and Climate Unit on Friday (8/29). This unit covers types of clouds, weather tools/instruments, cold/warm fronts, air pressure and systems, forecasting, the water cycle, extreme weather, and weather patterns. The students will be researching a specific location's weather and will have to predict the weather for that area on a certain day. They will then film a weather broadcast. I will need volunteers to help videotape the students so keep an eye out for emails about this and let me know if you are interested.

Math
This year in Math, the students will not only learn new concepts but will be able to apply these concepts to real world situations. As a Math Lover, I cannot wait to get this Math year started. Some of the concepts the students will be learning about are fractions, decimals, volume, order of operations, place value, and polygon identification. I will post weekly what the students will be covering as well as the homework they have.
Science
Oh the joys of Science in 5th grade! I am quite excited for all four Science units the students learn about in 5th grade. We will start out with Weather and Climate in the 1st quarter. We will then move on to Human Body Systems in the 2nd quarter. This unit does include Human Growth and Development. More information will be shared at a later date about this unit. In the 3rd quarter, the students will dive into an Ecosystems Unit. We will finish the year with Force and Motion. I will be asking for a lot of volunteers for Science so if you are able to come in and help, please let me know when the time comes.
